Snowfall: not seen since 1950!

During the afternoon of January 28th 2006, snow fell and almost blocked access to the village.

With a bit of luck, it was taking more or less half an hour to get to the centre of Bize-Minervois from the hamlet of Cabezac (a distance of around 2 kilometres), due to the many cars having broken down at the side of the road.

However, from the middle of the afternoon, the civic technical services started clearing away some of the abandoned vehicles from the public highways, which were encroaching badly on the road.

The situation was further complicated when an electricity failure, caused by fallen trees and the weight of the snow on the lines, affected the village. For some, the power was re-established during the evening at 23.00. By Sunday morning, a third of the village was still without electricity.

A crisis group met on Sunday in the Mairie at 10.00, then again at midday to check on the situation: the civic technical services and the fire brigade made their contribution by visiting the older people in their homes, clearing the main roads, making possible routes passable for vehicles, and making plans for the following night.

In the memory of the Bize population, it had not snowed like this since the start of the 1950s.
