On June 9th 2006, mayor Alain Fabre and the village council welcomed to Bize Marcel Rainaud, President of the Department Council, Gérard Schivardi, local counsellor, Senator Roland Courteau, Deputy Jacques Bascou, Christian Gueydan, Sub-Prefect of Narbonne, Bernard Naudy, President of the Community of Communes of the Canal du Midi in Minervois, and the mayors or their representatives from surrounding communes.

The inauguration of the Place des Anciens Combattants took place at the end of the morning in front of many people, in the presence of the councillors and of the presidents of the veterans and military medal holders of the canton of Ginestas, flag-bearers, brass band and Lieutenant Pierre Rieux, fire chief of Bize.

Mr Rolland Lafon, president of the veterans of Bize-Minervois, paid homage to the 47 Bizois, who died for their country during the three conflicts - 1914-1918, 1939-1945, and North Africa. "We owe it to them that we can live freely today and in peace", declared Mr Lafon, who underlined the necessity of passing on their memory to younger generations, to avoid history repeating itself. As part of that, some of the children from the village took part in this gathering by solemnly reading the names of the 47 soldiers, who died for their country. Three years after the inauguration of the war memorial, the inauguration of this Place des Anciens Combattants marks one of the important stages in the council's urbanisation project.

In his speech, Roland Courteau saluted "a welcoming village, where you can feel better in the present and look to the future." As well as his homage to the veterans, the Senator of the Aude recalled the importance of history. "Memory is the first right accorded to the victims, the first bastion of peace", declared the Senator, who quoted Victor Hugo: "Memories are our strength, they break up the darkness, and when night tries to return, we must light up the big anniversaries, just as we would light the candlesticks."

Deputy Jacques Bascou underlined the dynamism of the town council and the associations of the veterans and flag-bearers. "In the Minervois, men give of their time to rightfully maintain the memory. The men have always risen to defend their loyalty to the land and to our region. Today it is important that the elected council and members of the viticulture profession get together and deliver concrete proposals", declared the deputy, who drew attention to the importance of the vine in the culture and heritage of our region.

Christian Gueydan was touched by this very moving and patriotic ceremony. "Since 1945, thanks to the courage, the selflessness and sacrifice of our veterans, our country has not known war on its home territory." The Sub-Prefect of Narbonne recalled the wars of conquest, now a part of history. "Wars today are more insidious, they are ideological: faced with racism, anti-Semitism, and religious radicalism, we must be vigilant. We cannot give way to these ideologies", declared Mr Gueydan. Regarding the work recently carried out in the area of the commune as part of the urbanisation project, the Sub-Prefect recalled that "each time the mayor of Bize took the initiative, the State representative was by his side". At the end of this ceremony, the official delegation, all the participants and the general public retired to the village hall to drink a memorial apéritif.
