The wines of Saint Michel Archange
Charles Janbon, lecturer in the faculty of medicine in Montpellier, is from a Bize family. 7 or 8 generations of his mother's family, the Archangels, have lived there.
The wine "Saint Michel Archange" is a recent label: the first blend dates from 2005. Its name was partly inspired by the patron saint of Bize, Saint Michel, combined with the slightly modified name of the Bize family Archangel.
One can see on the labels of these Minervois wines an outline of a figure, crossing the medieval gate of Saint Michel in Bize.
The vine enterprise is based on 15 hectares of family land, a place known as "La Barrabe", of which a part of the production land (4 hectares with small outputs of 40 hectolitres per hectare) is made into wine in their own cellar.
For Charles Janbon, whose speciality is vascular illnesses, this entry into wine represents bringing his experience from his medical work to be used in the vineyard. For years, Mr. Janbon has held conferences with the intention of promoting studies to show the effectiveness of wine (and Mediterranean food) in the prevention of vascular illnesses.
